On top of the lion’s rock!
Get ready for a small challenge and conquer the more than 1200 steps that lead to the top of Lion Rock. Do not be afraid, this is an absolute must in Sri Lanka! The climb is characterized by good paths and stairs. The departure to the terraced gardens gives you the most impressive perspective of the rock.
During your climb to a break in Sigiriya, frescoes (ancient wall drawings), a wall of mirrors and claws carved into the rock that are just before the final climb.
Once you reach the top of the rock, enjoy the incredible 360-degree views of the entire region. Each corner has its own unique view. Try to spot some areas you have just visited in Sri Lanka.
Since Lion Rock in Sigiriya is one of the biggest attractions in the country, perhaps the biggest, they made the ticket prices (very) high for Sri Lankan standards. The entrance fee per person is 4500 LKR, which is about 30 USD.
Best time to climb Lion Rock in Sigiriya
It is recommended to climb The Lion Rock from 7 am to avoid the heat and crowds. The climb to the top takes about 45 minutes. Exploring the entire area around and on top of the Rock takes about 2 to 3 hours.
Is the hike to Lion Rock difficult?
Reaching the top is quite a climb, but there is a good safe staircase leading to the top.
Bees and monkeys
Monkeys sometimes walk around trying to catch something that is in your bag. Therefore, make sure that everything is in your bag so that nothing happens.
There are signs that bees can become aggressive when flying a drone, for example. This is why it is not allowed to fly a drone!
The Pidurangala Rock, an alternative to The Lion Rock
If you want to see a different view of Lion Rock and save a lot of money, climb Pidurangala Rock. Admission is only 5 USD instead of 30 USD for the big Lion Rock. Both rocks are very impressive, so try to climb both if you have the time.
